The Namib Desert is reputedly the oldest desert on earth. Its essential character is given by the dynamic starshaped dunes, some of the highest in the world, which vary in colour, shape and composition and tower over the Sossusvlei, a huge dried-up clay pan.

Every few years, after a good rainy season, the Tsauchab River flows into the pan and creates a lake, a heaven for waterbirds in the middle of a sea of sand. The Sossusvlei should be visited in the early morning or the late afternoon, when the pastel colours and shades change in the twilight. This area is one of the highlights on your Namibian itinerary. Experience the living desert.
